Leiden Declaration of AI and Mathematics
I have recently read and am now a signatory of the Leiden Declaration of AI and Mathematics.
Some particular points jumped out to me as important:
- Public discourse also represents, to me, the necessity of talking about the problem. In the absence of any other means of influencing policy or decision-making regarding AI, conversation around the topic is a way of educating yourself and others about it.
- Evaluate the ethical consequences of your work is just a generally important guideline.
- Support public research laboratories demonstrate the value of public-funded and public-realised efforts.
- Invest in public computational infrastructure is a breath of fresh air. I hadn’t thought about this much and it’s great to see this here, because it’s probably a good idea. Also aligns with the point above.
It would have been nice to see institutions from the Global South in the Working Group, but it’s nonetheless a good start.
Also, once I noticed it was published on Zenodo, I wondered why it was not published on arXiv too. Maybe to avoid being part of AI training data? I imagine Zenodo to enjoy better regulations in this regard, but I’m not sure if it’s really the case.
